Unannounced projects were part of THQ Montreal buy, says Ubisoft

Ubisoft has told Joystiq that it will look to provide continuity for THQ Montreal’s staff as it plans to welcome the studio into its organisational structure. It also confirmed that unannounced projects were part of the acquisition.

“It is too early to say” whether former Ubisoft creative lead Patrice Desilets will return to the company as part of the deal, Ubisoft added. Desilets left Ubisoft for THQ Montreal in 2011.

The statement in full reads: “It’s too soon to say for certain, but we are very excited about THQ Montreal becoming part Ubisoft.

“In the coming weeks we’ll be looking at how to offer an organizational structure that provides continuity for the creative teams involved. Unannounced projects from THQ Montreal are included as part of the acquisition.

“We are very excited to welcome the experienced and talented people from THQ Montreal to our internal development teams, and are convinced that they will be bringing a lot to the group.”

Ubisoft also acquired the rights to publish Obsidian’s South Park: The Stick of Truth as part of the THQ bankruptcy sale.

EFF Moves To Nix Trademark On “Gaymer”

netbuzz writes “Spurred by the mark holder’s cease and desist letter to Reddit’s subreddit r/gaymer, the Electronic Frontier Foundation today officially petitioned the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to rescind its grant of a trademark registration on the word “gaymer”. ‘This registration should never have been granted,’ said EFF Intellectual Property Director Corynne McSherry. ‘Gaymer is a common term that refers to members of this vibrant gaming community, and we are happy to help them fight back and make sure the term goes back to the public domain where it belongs.'”

SWTOR: That’s no gay planet. It’s just a bunch of unimaginative journalists

Fraser Brown bemoans the sensationalist and reactionary reporting on Star Wars: The Old Republic’s latest expansion, Rise of the Hutt Cartel. “When BioWare announced the addition of same sex relationships to its latest Star Wars: The Old Republic expansion, Rise of the Hutt Cartel, it was as if the deity of shoddy journalism himself had bestowed a great gift upon his insipid minions. Hang on a moment, they squawked, this all takes place on one planet? It must be a gay planet! And lo did they take that sensationalist premise and run with it. Thats how Makeb, the world featured in the expansion, became a gay planet. Once again, the gaming press were making news, not reporting it, because, frankly, video game news can be boring, but tastelessness and homophobia are hot topics, and damn do they get hits.”
